All reconditioned steering racks are thoroughly inspected and reconditioned to a high standard and go through various stages of reconditioning before they are returned to stock and then shipped to a workshop for fitting to a vehicle.
Strip-Down and Initial Inspection
The rack is completely taken down to parts, so that everything can be inspected for any damage, such as cracks, scoring or corrosion. This includes the housing, rack bar, pinion and valve assembly.
Worn Parts Replaced
On the Ford Steering Racks that we recondition, the Seals, O-rings and bushes are removed and new ones fitted as part of the reconditioning process. This is regardless of their appearance. By fitting a full seal kit at this stage, we prevent early failure of the reconditioned steering rack, after it has been re-fitted to the car.
Rack Bar and Pinion Checked
After this the rack bar is checked for straightness and pinion teeth for wear. Pitting or other damage to the pinion can cause early wear and affect the steering feel. Early wear can result in steering not returning to centre or other unusual steering behaviour. A steering rack that is outside of specified limits is typically replaced with a reconditioned steering rack rather than attempting to recondition it.
Reassembly to Specification

Pressure Testing
Pressure Testing Once reassembled the steering rack is then connected up to a test rig and subjected to test pressure to check for any leaks coming from any of the new seals installed.
Final Function Check
On completion of the reconditioning process, the Steering Rack is tested for smooth even movement throughout its full operational travel. No stiffness or notches are permitted. The Steering Rack is then packaged and dispatched.
A reconditioned rack done properly should perform just as well as a new rack.
