What is Limescale and How to Prevent It?

While limescale doesn’t pose a health risk, it is unsightly to live with. It clogs fixtures and appliances and can even cause mechanical parts to malfunction. To prevent this, you need to clean your taps, toilets, bathtubs, and shower heads regularly. To help prevent limescale buildup, make sure to wipe wet surfaces after every use. If you notice that water is sitting longer than usual, it might be time to replace those pipes.

One of the main problems caused by limescale is blocked pipes. Not only does limescale make pipes and showers less efficient, it can also damage tap seals, resulting in a costly plumber’s bill. If you have clogged pipes, consider Drain Lining Surveys from https://www.wilkinson-env.co.uk/sewer-repairs-drain-lining-concrete-cutting/drain-lining

Limescale can also devalue property and make chrome fittings corrode. Once this occurs, it will be nearly impossible to clean out and may lead to further issues. Luckily, there are some solutions that can prevent limescale buildup.

Vinegar is a natural cleaner. You can use it to clean bathtubs, shower screens, and tiles. A vinegar solution of one part vinegar to three parts water should be applied to affected surfaces and left to sit for half an hour. When this solution is no longer effective, simply wipe the affected area with a soft cloth. For a longer term solution, you can install a water softener in your plumbing system.

Water filters are another option. These devices remove the unwanted minerals from hard water and help prevent the formation of limescale. Similar to cartridges, these water filters can be installed to prevent it. If you’re using tap water, make sure to check the chemistry of your water before purchasing a filter. Calcium and magnesium are the primary culprits of limescale formation. Once you know which minerals cause limescale formation, you can use the appropriate water softener to prevent it.

Water contains different impurities and minerals, which makes it harder to remove. Hard water is high in magnesium and calcium carbonates. When water evaporates quickly, the minerals are left behind and cause a layer of limescale. These minerals are difficult to remove and can damage appliances. Water softeners and descaling agents are two options for removing limescale from your water. However, if you’re using hard water, you may want to consider installing a water softener in your plumbing system.

Besides preventing limescale, you can also clean your appliances with acidic substances, such as vinegar or lemon juice. To avoid a limescale problem, you should also check the manufacturers’ instructions carefully and follow their instructions. Using these solutions will keep your appliances free of limescale.
