Ways to Trick Out Your Garage

If you spend lots of time in your garage, you may wish it were a little nicer. You don’t need to turn it into a full-fledged mancave to justify adding a few features that make it a more comfortable space for working on your car or at your workbench.

Upgrade the Opener

One of the nicest garage door accessories that you can install is a superior quality garage door opener. Really nice garage openers allow you to come and go without shaking the windows and waking the baby. Keyed garage door entry is also an extra layer of security for your family, your car and your power tools.

Control the Temperature

Garages can get hot, so consider adding a small window unit to keep the space comfortable for your evening or weekend projects. It’s nearly impossible to cool a garage down without at least two open doors and windows to create a cross breeze. Keeping everything open may invite crimes of opportunity but installing a window unit will keep your business private. If cold is more of a problem in your area, a space heater and an insulated garage door can help solve that problem.

Install Extra Outlets

A common garage hazard is the crisscross of power cords. Eliminate this problem by having a certified electrician install a few extra electrical outlets. Don’t forget to get at least one installed up high near your workbench for tools or task lights.

Seal the Floor

Most garage floors contain an oil or paint stain or two. If a clean looking garage is important to you consider sealing the concrete. You can seal it yourself or hire a professional. There are several options depending on the look you want. Some experts recommend a polyurethane sealer on top of an epoxy sealer. You can pick a colorful shiny finish or stick with matte gray.

Garages are often the last space in a house to get a make-over. If you spend lots of time in your garage, however, insist on making it comfortable, attractive and secure.
