Essential Home Maintenance Jobs

There are certain maintenance jobs around the home that you’ll come to regret if you forget! Your life could be a lot easier, less stressful and less expensive if you learn to spot the warning signs of a potential problem and know how to fix it or know where to turn for help. Here are some important pointers for keeping an eye on your home:

The Roof

Checking your roof regularly means looking out for cracks or movement in the tiles, or replacing tiles that have come off. Neglecting your roof can lead to water damage. Flat roofs in particular need to be checked for signs of any standing water, which can lead to water staining and leaks inside the home if left untreated.

Gutters

This is such a simple task but can cause major issues if neglected. Check for any build-up of leaves, branches, nests or any other objects that could cause a blockage and lead to your gutters overflowing. If blocked guttering is left to cause water build-up, it can lead to internal damp and rotting of any woodwork.

Bathroom Sealant

If your sealant hasn’t been topped up for a long time, you might notice missing or cracked areas that are no longer water tight. Water seeping through these gaps could be causing water damage in the rooms below as well as the bathroom. Make sure you replace any broken or missing sealant to prevent any further damage.

Heating

A boiler should be regularly checked by a professional to ensure safe, effective and economical running. Nobody wants their boiler breaking down in the middle of winter, so the best time to have a maintenance check is early autumn. If your boiler is old, you might want to consider replacing it for one with much higher efficiency. For Boiler Installation Gloucester, visit HPR Services

Windows

If you have wooden frames and noticing leaks, your frames might be beginning to rot. If you have upvc double glazing and a leak, then you’ll need to check the sealant for cracks. Excessive condensation on your windows is a sign of too much moisture in the air and not enough ventilation. Try to limit the amount of moisture to prevent water damage to frames and accumulation of worrying substances like mould on walls or in the backs of cupboards.

Floorboards

If your floorboards seem overly springy or you notice a damp smell or damp spots in the bottom of a wall, you might have a problem with rotting in the timber joists that support the floor. You’ll want to call in a professional straight away to examine the area. If left, a type of fungus will destroy the wood and you could be left with a collapsed floor!

Drains

As with the guttering, regular maintenance of your drains is a great idea to avoid potentially smelly blockages. Remove any debris accumulation and don’t pour anything into your sinks that you know you shouldn’t like fat or oil for example.
