What You Should Know Before Hiring an Architect

There are many benefits involved in hiring an architect to help you remodel your home, plan an addition, or even build it from the ground up. These professionals provide the knowledge and expertise required to put your ideas on paper. They can create workable blueprints. They can, perhaps, even oversee your building project from its start to finish.

Of course, there are plenty of architects qualified to do the job. How can you select the one that’s right for your project? There are a few things you’ll want to consider before hiring an architect.

Aesthetics

Like any type of artist or designer, every architect has his or her own unique aesthetic style. For example, you can ask any two architects to design a home in the arts and crafts style. They are certain to come up with two completely different concepts based on your input and their own stylistic sensibilities.

You should therefore spend some time perusing local galleries or portfolios. Consequently, you can find out who planned the structures you admire. Architects are sure to take your wants and needs into account when creating their blueprints and mockups. Therefore, you should always start by selecting a professional whose work you are most drawn to.

What You Should Know Before Hiring an Architect

Experience

Even more important than architectural aesthetic concerns is practicality. You need an architect that has the knowledge and experience for this. They will then create a safe and functional living space for you and your family. As in any field of design, the cardinal rule is always “form follows function”.

This is not to say that that the look of your home is not of importance. However, it is certainly secondary to creating a usable space. An experienced architect is able to accomplish both of these goals. This is done with a sound plan that delivers everything you are looking for.

Services

Not all architects offer the same types of services. Therefore, you really need to find out what your preferred vendors offer. This is in addition to what services you need for your project. Some are very happy to create blueprints. They will even consult after the fact if more alterations need to be made during the construction process.

Others may provide the names of trusted contractors. They can offer to check in during construction in order to make sure everything is going according to plan. They may even oversee the entire project from start to finish. You will simply have to decide which services you want before hiring an architect for your project.

Cost

No matter how big your budget is, chances are it has a limit. Cost is always a factor and you need to have at least a rough idea of how much your architect charges. In some cases, it is a flat rate to create blueprints. It can also be a percentage of the overall project cost, if the architect stays on to oversee it. Some may also charge an hourly rate for specific services.
